Sekmechoy, a restaurant that has its roots at Salak South specializing in Claypot Pepper Bak Kut Teh is the latest addition to the huge list of Bak Kut Teh restaurants in Kepong. But first let me just say that if you do could not afford to be the earliest customer or wait for at least one hour during peak periods, you can forget about eating here because they are currently understaffed as well as overwhelmed with customers. Getting a table would be the least of your concerns, as the food is getting out of the kitchen really slowly. Luckily the food was very good and quite worth the wait, else I would have been cranky. I know I have said some bad things about pepper based Bak Kut Teh in the past. But after trying Sekmechoy’s I have to take back those words now. Although it tastes very different from the herbal version, there is no doubt it is still delicious in its own way. I find the clear broth’s peppery flavor spot on and not too overpowering, which I think is why it tastes acceptable for me. Each portion costs RM11. The Pickled Mustard Rice @ RM2 is highly recommended. Prepared with a lot of ingredients like dried shrimps, coriander, pickled mustard and lard, it tastes absolutely wonderful and I can eat it on its own. Hakka Mui Choy Kao Yuk @ RM14.50 – Not the best looking dish but it’s really good. The meat are sliced into bite-size thickness and the even distribution of fat makes them melt in your mouth. A signature vege dish here is 鱼香茄子 (Stir Fried Eggplants with Salted Fish and Minced Meat) @ RM8. I thought it was well executed considering the eggplants are succulent and did not turn soft and mushy. But ultimately, it is the subtle amount of salted fish that did wonders to make this dish truly appetizing. Mushroom and Minced Meat Tofu @ RM8 – Exceptionally smooth and comforting. In all, our bill came to a total of RM56 inclusive of 3 bowls of salted mustard rice and drinks. Quite reasonable seeing all the food we ordered that stuffed us silly. But of course the most important thing is the food quality, which I think is top notch for a restaurant of this price range. Despite adoring the food and all, the horrible kitchen service alone hinders me from visiting again. Maybe I should choose to eat at the Salak South branch instead next time.
